Excursion to Monasteries
This tour will take us into the mysteries of the most important monasteries in La Rioja. It will also allow us to be introduced to the first written samples of the Spanish language.
This excursion is scheduled on July, 20 (after lunch). Participants will be taken by bus to Suso and Yuso, in San Millán de la Cogolla, world heritage site renowned for being the cradle of the Spanish language. The Monastery of Suso (meaning ‘upwards’) is an ancient Visigothic construction, which is believed to be the oldest of its kind in Spain. A simple and austere place, it provides a setting for an encounter with our real identity as Spaniards.
The tour will end in the Monastery of Yuso (‘downwards’), which is considered the Escorial of La Rioja. This monastery has one of the most important archives of medieval documents. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997 and in it you will find the first few words that have been attested in Spanish.
The excursion fee is 49 euros and includes:
- Entrance tickets to the two monasteries
- Shuttle bus
- Tourist guide the whole tour (4 hours approx.)
- Limited places (minimum: 20 participants).
